Davison is a city located in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,536. The city is located within Davison Township, but is politically independent.
Davison was named after Judge Norman Davison, who founded a nearby town formerly known as Davisonville, now known as Atlas.
Davison is the hometown for participants in several prominent events in American history.
Thomas C. Hart, a US Navy admiral and superintendant of the Naval Academy in the early 20th Century, was born and raised in Davison. He graduated early from Davison High School to attend Annapolis, beginning a career that saw him at the forefront of developing combat strategies in submarine warfare. The strategies and tactics he developed were key to the success American submariners achieved against Japanese forces in World War II. Later, he became a senator from Connecticut, where he died in 1971. The naval support vessel USS Thomas C. Hart was christened in his honor.
In 1980, the US Olympic Hockey team achieved what was thought to be impossible: defeating the far more experienced Soviet hockey team enroute to winning the gold medal. Defenseman and Davison resident Ken Morrow was a key asset in that victory. Later that year, Morrow was signed by the New York Islanders, where he was pivotal in the Islanders' Stanley Cup victory. Ken Morrow joined a select few by winning both an Olympic gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year.
Filmmaker Michael Moore was born in nearby Flint on April 23, 1954, spent most of his childhood in Davison, and graduated from Davison High School.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 km2 (1.8 mi2). 4.6 km2 (1.8 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,536 people, 2,496 households, and 1,465 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,200.8/km2 (3,106.3/mi2). There are 2,652 housing units at an average density of 575.2/km2 (1,488.1/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 96.46% White, 0.51% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,496 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.3% are non-families. 36.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.92.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 81.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $37,482, and the median income for a family is $51,925. Males have a median income of $42,719 versus $28,222 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,449. 6.7% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
